Ever since becoming a mom I’ve become way more concerned about the chemicals we have in our home and what we put on our body. There are only a few simple ingredients in this and I bet you can pronounce them all.

Why Make DIY Foaming Hand Soap?

You might be wondering, Why should I bother making my own foaming hand soap when I can just buy it from the store? Well, there are actually several great reasons to DIY your own foaming soap.

  1. Customizable Scents
Making your own foaming hand soap gives you full control over the scent. Want something fresh and citrusy? Or perhaps you prefer lavender or eucalyptus for a relaxing touch? With DIY hand soap, you can blend your favorite essential oils to create the perfect fragrance that fits your mood or the season.
  2. Eco-Friendly and Non-Toxic
By creating your own foaming hand soap, you’re cutting down on the plastic packaging waste that comes with store-bought soaps. All you need is a reusable pump bottle, and you’re set. Plus, DIY recipes often use ingredients that are biodegradable and non-toxic, making your soap much gentler on the environment.
  3. Budget-Friendly
Let’s face it, buying foaming hand soap at the store can get expensive. Why spend more when you can make your own for a fraction of the cost? Plus, the ingredients last a while, so you’ll be able to make many more batches than you would buying pre-made soap.
  4. Gentle and Nourishing
When you make your own soap, you can choose ingredients that are gentle and nourishing for your skin. Commercial soaps often contain harsh chemicals and artificial additives, but homemade versions are much more skin-friendly, especially if you opt for natural oils like coconut oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil.

The Ingredients You’ll Need

The beauty of making your own foaming hand soap is that it’s easy to customize. However, there are a few basic ingredients that you’ll always need, and they’re simple to find at your local store or online.

  1. Liquid Castile Soap
This is the base for your DIY foaming hand soap. Castile soap is a gentle, plant-based soap that works great for sensitive skin. You can find it in a variety of scents, or you can buy unscented and add your own essential oils. It’s biodegradable, cruelty-free, and a fantastic choice for your homemade soap! I always keep a large bottle of Dr. Bronner’s unscented on hand.
  2. Water
Water is essential to dilute the soap and create that foamy texture.
  3. Essential Oils (Optional)
Here’s where the fun really begins! Essential oils add both scent and skin benefits to your DIY foaming hand soap. Whether you prefer calming lavender, refreshing lemon, or invigorating peppermint, the choice is yours. Just make sure to use high-quality essential oils, and remember a little goes a long way.
  4. Carrier Oil (Optional)
If you want your soap to have extra moisturizing benefits, consider adding a carrier oil like coconut oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil. These oils are nourishing for the skin and will help keep your hands soft and smooth.
  5. Foaming Soap Dispenser
Of course, you’ll need something to pump the foaming soap! You can repurpose an old foaming hand soap dispenser or buy a new one. Make sure the dispenser has a pump that’s designed for foaming soap, as regular soap dispensers won’t create that foamy effect.

Instructions for DIY Foaming Hand Soap

  1. Prepare Your Dispenser
If you’re reusing an old foaming soap dispenser, make sure it’s clean and dry. If it’s new, remove any packaging or labels.
  2. Add Liquid Castile Soap
Pour 1/4 cup of liquid Castile soap into the dispenser. This will be the base of your foaming hand soap.
  3. Add Water
Next, pour in 1/2 cup of water. This helps dilute the soap and creates that signature foamy texture. I’ve found 1/2 cup of water to be the perfect amount but you can also just fill it with water until almost the top.
  4. Add Carrier Oil (Optional)
For extra moisturizing properties, add about 1 teaspoon of carrier oil, such as coconut or olive oil. If your skin is particularly dry, this is a great option.
  5. Add Essential Oils
Now for the fun part—choosing your scent! Add 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oils (my magic number seems to be 15.) For a refreshing soap, try a mix of lemon and peppermint. For a soothing scent, lavender and chamomile work beautifully together. You can also experiment with blending different oils to find the perfect combination.
  6. Shake it Up
Put the lid on your dispenser, give it a good shake, and voila! You’ve got yourself a batch of homemade foaming hand soap.

Tips for Customizing Your DIY Foaming Hand Soap

Now that you know how to make a basic foaming hand soap, let’s talk about ways to get creative with your DIY concoctions! Here’s a good list of essential oils to keep on hand.

  1. Scent Combinations
Play around with different essential oil blends to create a signature scent for your soap. Some popular combinations include:
    • Lavender + Tea Tree
    • Orange + Clove
    • Peppermint + Eucalyptus
    • Grapefruit + Bergamot
  2. Make It Exfoliating
Add a small amount of sugar or sea salt to your soap for a mild exfoliating effect. This is perfect for a gentle scrub after gardening or cooking.
  3. Go Seasonal
You can make different soaps for each season! For example, make a warm, cinnamon-scented soap for fall, or a cool, minty soap for summer.

DIY foaming hand soap is one of those simple pleasures in life that brings both creativity and practicality together. You’ll not only have a soap that you love, but you’ll also be saving money and keeping your home non-toxic. With just a few easy-to-find ingredients, you can create custom soaps that are gentle, nourishing, and, most importantly—fun to make!

So, the next time you run out of store-bought soap, consider whipping up a batch of your own. Your hands—and your wallet—will thank you!
